Keeping it Together

Lately, starting a new semester has been frustrating. I went in with a bright and optimistic outlook and left in a deflated, stressed out state. With numerous tests and quizzes already, I definitely underestimated my junior year of high school. I’ve been stressed out and sad, feeling stupid and alone. But I don’t want to feel that way, not anymore.

School is school. It’s always going to be stressful but you can get through it. I think the key is to not let the little things get you down. Focus on the big things. Life is always going to have some ups and downs, but it’s about how you deal with them that counts. There are a lot of small things you can do to help you keep on track academically, professionally and personally.

Here are my little ways to keeping it together:

1) Keep an agenda/journal

Agendas can really help you organize and remember when certain projects and assignments are due. If you like doing it online, try Trello. Being on top of when things are happening, will prepare you more. Also, I think keeping a journal is a must. You don’t have to write in it everyday, just when you feel overwhelmed and suffocated. It’s better to let your feelings come out in your handwriting, than build up inside you and later on tear you apart. You can’t keep heavy things inside you forever. Even talking about it with someone else helps, but make sure who you open up to.

2) Exercise/Eat healthy

This seems like a no-brainer, but exercise truly can help. With the release of endorphins, it will help you let loose (I like dancing!). Even doing some stretching everyday can ease your stress. Also, lay off the chocolate! It’s definitely necessary in the worst of times, but try not to make it a habit. Swap your cappuccino for some green tea!

3) Hold onto your inner peace

By this, I mean you have to forgive yourself. You’re going to mess up, make mistakes, and fail a couple of tests, but that’s okay. You can’t hold everything wrong against yourself. For example, even though I hate Math, I’m trying and I comfort myself knowing that this semester will eventually end (three more months!). Furthermore, you shouldn’t even let people get you down. Don’t cry over people who don’t care about you. Let go of things that are heavy to make room for lighter, happier things.

Just keep going and don’t take anything too seriously. Life goes on, and you’ll have new and better things to conquer. Let your stress drive you, not kill you.
