Prom Inspiration 2014: Dresses (Celebrity Edition)

Prom season is upon us and I could not be more excited. For those of you who have tucked your prom memories into your high school yearbook and left it there, this will be a great dose of nostalgia.

With each generation comes a new wave of updates to classic prom staples. Gone are the days of stiff ball room gowns and skin-tight minis. A prom dress can be anything you want it to be, whether it’s a sexy dark gown with a thigh-high slit, or a ladylike frock full of lace and sparkles.

Finding the perfect prom dress is a timely (and costly!) endeavour and one that should not be rushed. Your first step? Inspiration. Who better to look to for the 101 on fabulous gowns than the A-listers who wear them all the time? Celebrities practically breathe designer dresses and have perfected the poses that show them off the best. Here are some of my favourite celebrity and runway inspired prom dresses with some less costly alternatives:

1. Feminine Pastels

How  gorgeous is this satin pink Prabal Gurung dress? Pastels are always a huge trend for spring (*cue Meryl Streep*) and I love how this dress is beautiful without being too girly. The alternative to the right from Le Chateau is a gorgeous petal pink that is not too stuffy but formal enough to make you feel like a princess.

2. Sporty with a Twist

Taylor looks amazing and toned in this J. Mendel gown. Slits are great for girls with longer legs, but make sure you’re pairing it with a demure top, or else it can look over the top for prom. Crop tops are great way to add a sense of sensuality and show off your toned arms, but once again, make sure it’s made up of a strong material and doesn’t look like you’ve cut out one of your t-shirts. My alternative to the right is a BCBG Max Azria gown from Rent the Runway and it’s a perfect blend of sleek cutouts and slits to make you look and feel like your best.

3. Short and Sleek

I know that dressing up does not quite excite others the same way it does for me, but never fear! There are great ways to spice up a shorter dress. Make sure to look for unique details that will help you stand out and not blend into the cluster of indistinguishable cocktail dresses. For example, the white sash on Selena’s Erin Featherston mini adds individuality to an otherwise boring outfit. This ASOS alternative is such a cool blend of lace and pastels, that gives it a modern and refreshing look. All the unique details will really have heads turning!
